So, more public Katie drama. On Monday, I started to feel an aura during a staff meeting, and had enough time to grab my bag and get myself into the hallway to take my Nayzilam nose spray and avoid a full blown seizure (small victory, in our world!) But after I use the spray, I'm pretty much drugged and need to sleep it off. So, because I had the use of both of my arms (seizures make my left arm and leg useless for about half an hour) and because the meeting was on campus, I called Brad from my apple watch to come over and get me. Even though it wasn't a seizure, I still have to fill out an "incident report" with HR. I guess I get that they are covering their asses. But I really want to scream, "It was just an episode!!"
What do you want to do?
Does this question ever get easier? I feel like from every job interview to present - everyone wants to know where you'll be in 5 years. And I still find it an impossible question. I mean, I guess we start with the baseline of "alive," but I just bank on that one. I hope you do too. But, I also think the what do you want to do question also boils down to the larger issue of using our jobs as the main identifying label that we put on ourselves. It's how we introduce ourselves at parties, and it's why we pass out business cards when we are meeting new people.
Particularly since the pandemic, I meet and hear about more and more people leaving jobs, seeking new opportunities and just plain confused about what they want to do. I like to chalk it up to wanting to leave more of a lasting impact than, "I'm Nancy and I write reports and emails all day." In fact, there was a hilarious TikTok about office jobs that I will insert here if I can find it. Nevermind, it's more explicit than I remember. But, it's basically talking about how we are all emailing and writing reports all day, but who are we emailing and who is actually reading these reports - it's hilarious, trust me or I hope you stumble upon it yourself.
So, when asked who I am at parties from here on out, I'll try to say, I'm Katie, connector and encourager of people, and I also happen to work in higher education.
I think most of us wanted the busy-culture to change or evolve after the pandemic. Unfortunately, most went right back to the sentiment of the meme below. And I'm sorry to say, but none of us are NOT actually that important, unless you are the doctor performing the surgery.
Mar and Lar
My Dad and Mom were here for a visit a few weeks ago and it was so nice to have them down here with us. for a long weekend. We love seeing them enjoy the warm weather, spending time with them, and especially chatting over coffee. Maybe we can eventually talk them into coming down and staying...
We also got to have a really nice dinner out together at Eddie V's in uptown, which was a treat for all of us!
I realize that I cut off some heads in these photos, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
Mia
That great family visit was followed up by a brief visit from our daughter, Mia. She was here in order to officially get her NC car title signed over to her and some other adulting things, but we also had some fun dinners and walks around the hood. And she was able to take a swim in our tub upstairs (I am not a bath person), but if you are, and Mia is, this tub was made for you! Obviously, I'm not being hired as a real estate photographer anytime soon.
Bennys!!! And, is this really the only photo that I took?!
I’m counting on being alive in five years with my best buddy at my side! Also plan to still be doing yoga and going to coffee and having fun with friends! In our spare time making trips to Charlotte and hanging with two of our most favorite people!♥️
I loved your comment about “what do you want to do in 5 years”. I have always disliked this question in interviews! it’s the worst!
